Rodney P. Vandeberg

 Rodney P. Vandeberg, 78, of Falls City, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015. He was born October 1, 1936 in Sheldon, Iowa. Proceeded in death by his parents, brother, Bernard and wife of 46 years Janis Scholz Vandeberg.

Rod began a 50 plus year banking career in 1956 at City National Bank & Trust in Kansas City. He and Jan moved to Lincoln in 1960 where he worked at National Bank of Commerce. They moved to Falls City in 1973 where he was Chairman, President and CEO with First National Bank & Trust for over 35 years.

Rod was very involved with many civic and professional activities. During his career he served as president of the Nebraska Bankers Association. He was active in the Lincoln Jaycees and served as their president and as a State Vice President and Parliamentarian of the Nebraska Jaycees. He served on boards of the Lutheran Family Services Foundation, Peru State College Foundation and the Vandeberg Family Foundation.

Rod served the community of Falls City in many roles, including being the mayor from 2006-2010. Rod was a leader of many fundraising projects that supported local schools, a new ballpark, new hospital, new swimming pool, museums and a new library giving generously to each of these. He also was very active in the economic development of the Falls City area.

Rod served our country in the United States Army Reserve from 1958-1964. He also was appointed as the State of Nebraska District 1 Highway Commissioner by the governor in 2008.

Rod is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Pam and Don Sheets of Lincoln and Lori and Jim Parrish of Auburn; grandchildren Stacy and Anthony Gerber of St. Joseph, MI, Amanda and Lars Nielsen of Lincoln, Matt Sheets of Lincoln, Tommy and Maggie Parrish of Carroll, IA, Emily and Brett Crotty of Auburn, Jeff and Emily Sheets of Lincoln and Mallory Parrish of Auburn; great-grandchildren Landon, Luka, Eli, Ava, Alexandria, and Nora.

Celebration of life service will be Monday, June 8, at 10:30 at Christ Lutheran Church, Falls City with Reverend Daniel Gifford officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 7, 2015 from 4-6:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to Christ Lutheran Church, Falls City, American Cancer Society, or family choice.
