Ernest O. "Ernie" Lukert, 95, of Sabetha, died Friday evening, May 11, 2012, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, where he had been a resident since October 2010.

Ernie was born April 1, 1917, in the Rock Creek Township, north of Sabetha, Kansas, the youngest of three siblings of Roy and Pauline Lortscher Lukert. The family moved to a farm ten miles south of Sabetha in the Fidelity area when he was three. Ernie attended New Hope country school first through eighth grade prior to attending Fairview High School where he graduated with the class of 1935.

Ernie served on the Capioma Township and Farmers Coop Elevator boards for many years. Ernie grew up, baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and attended church in Fairview, Hiawatha, and Sabetha all of his life.

Ernie married Esther Gilbert, April 6, 1939 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Fairview. After they were married, they farmed in the Rock Creek area north of Sabetha for five years. They later moved to a farm south of Sabetha where they farmed and raised cattle until they moved to Sabetha in 1993. His wife of 73 years survives of the home.

He is also survived by a son Lee (Connie) Lukert of Sabetha; two daughters: Susie (Dick) Dalton of Prairie Village, KS, Linda (Dick) Devoe of Topeka; eight grandchildren: Jaclyn (Luke) Pfizenmaier, Michelle (Lance) Langvardt, all of Clay Center, KS, John and Jessica Dalton of Prairie Village, Mike Devoe, Any (Andy) Green, Derek (Lori) Snook, all of Topeka, Jonathan (Brandy) Snook of Gray Georgia; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Eddie who was killed in action while serving in Vietnam, Mike, a daughter Dolores Reed, a grandson Bob Carter, a great-granddaughter Anna Pfizenmair, his siblings: Helen Lukert Thieme, and Ben Lukert.

A celebration of Ernie’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. Pastors Quentin Nuttmann and Mike Dunaway will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, after 9 a.m. Tuesday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Apostolic Christian Home or a charity of the donor’s choice which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th, Hiawatha 66434.
