Alvin D. Legler
Hiawatha, KS

Alvin D. Legler, 84, of Hiawatha, died early Saturday morning, May 19, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

He was born at Horton, January 7, 1928, the son of Frederick and Clara Jasper Legler. He grew up in the Horton-Hiawatha area where he attended school, graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1947. He enlisted with the Kansas Army National Guard when he was a senior and retired as Battalion Sergeant Major in the 1980’s from Headquarters in Topeka. In later years, he worked for Kleopper Oil Company in Hiawatha for a number of years.

Alvin was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; the American Legion; and a number of Amateur Radio Clubs. He enjoyed mechanics, boat fishing, and was very active as a radio amateur…was an under statement!

He was married to Jane Emily Clarke, October 26, 1952, at Horton. They lived in Topeka many years until retiring and moving to Hiawatha in the mid 1990’s. She died May 5, 2012.

Survivors include a son Gary Thomas Legler of Hiawatha; four grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Alvin was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Linda Kay Geyer; a son Donald Eugene Legler; and a brother Raymond Legler.

Memorial services are planned for 1:30 Thursday afternoon, June 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Reverend Randy Quinn officiating. Inurnment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery, with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will meet with friends for a half hour prior to services at the Church.
