Kathryn Jeanette Smith, 100, Auburn, formerly of Valley Falls, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at a care facility at Auburn.

She was born May 16, 1916, at St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Daniel and Fanny Griser Johnson. She graduated from high school and business school at Frederick, WI. She had lived in Valley Falls from 1961-2015.

Jeanette was a homemaker. She and her husband, Walt Smith, had lived in California. When they moved to Kansas, they farmed in the Cummings, Nortonville, Effingham and Valley Falls communities. Jeanette had been an adult care provider and had worked at the Western Auto Store and Hatfield’s Variety Store, both in Valley Falls. She was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Prairie Hall Club and Delaware Valley Quilters. She was a volunteer at the Clothes Closet in Valley Falls.

Jeanette enjoyed painting in different mediums, reading, discussing books and their authors, gardening and raising flowers. She often met with friends who shared the same interests.

She married Walter B. Smith, Oct. 11, 1940, at St. Paul, MN. He died June 15, 1993. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Smith, Feb. 22, 2016.

Survivors include her son, Ronald (Pamela) Smith, Auburn; her daughter, Marilyn Anne Curry, San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and family friend, Sherry Santee, Broken Arrow, OK.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
