Eugene F. “Gene” Miller, 87 years young, of Atchison, Kansas, died peacefully in his sleep on Easter Sunday at his home.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A Parish and Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited on Wednesday, April 19, at 6:00 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 7:30 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount St. Scholastica Monastery or St. Benedict Parish and may be left in care of the funeral home. Eugene was born February 20, 1930 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Henry Albert and Irmina C. Schletzbaum Miller. He attended St. Benedict’s School and graduated from Maur Hill High School. He then attended classes at a vocational school in the electrical department and became a journeyman electrician.

He and Mary E. “Beth” Wagner were united in marriage on June 2, 1956, by Fr. Matthew Hall at St. Joseph’s Church.

Gene was employed with Mount St. Scholastica until 1972 when he began working for Schultz Electrical Company in St. Joseph, Missouri as a journeyman electrician retiring at the age of sixty-two in 1992.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish where he participated at St. Joseph’s Church and was a member of Sacred Heart Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the IBEW Electrical Union of St. Joseph, Missouri.

In his spare time he enjoyed playing golf, gardening with Beth, bowling, fishing, wine making, mushroom hunting, traveling the country with his wife, spending time with family and friends, attending coffee club at CVS, and he enjoyed time outside “taking care of a bad habit” as he often told his children. He was also widely known as a handy man who was a “fixer” of all things.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Mary E. “Beth” Miller, Atchison, KS; two sons, Phillip (AnaMaria) Miller, Overland Park, KS; Henry J. “Hank” Miller, Merriam, KS; three daughters, Ruth A. (Lee) Eckert, Atchison, KS; Peggy (David) Howard, Leavenworth, KS; Sara Miller, Prairie Village, KS; two sisters, Sr. Irmina Miller, OSB, Atchison, KS; Alberta Prohaska, Atchison, KS; six grandchildren and a large extended family.

Gene was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Miller, John Miller, Leo Miller and a sister, Mary Cecilia Patton.

The family wishes to personally thank Kevin & Marcy Handke, and Peggy Davis, for everything they did for Dad the last 10 years.
