Mary Margaret Hart Broadfoot

Mary Margaret Hart Broadfoot, 92, Holton, died May 13, 2017 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.  She was born February 7, 1925, in Westmoreland, the youngest of six children of Col. Harry Lair Hart and Bernice Heath Hart. 

Mary Margaret graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1943, and then worked at the Pottawatomie County Probate Court office before attending Baker University where she graduated in 1948.  She married Kenneth H. Broadfoot on July 4, 1948 in Westmoreland.  The couple lived in Baldwin from 1948 to 1950, where she worked for Academic Dean Gessner at Baker University, and then followed Kenny’s career in education to Oskaloosa from 1950 to 1952, Effingham from 1952 to 1968, Westmoreland from 1968 to 1971, Pomona from 1971 to 1972, and Holton from 1972 to the present.  She worked as a school secretary at Effingham and Westmoreland, Gambles Department Store in Holton, and for 12 years at The Denison State Bank in Holton, retiring in 1989. 

She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority at Baker, and the Evangel United Methodist (EUM) Church in Holton, where she was a member of the Kings’ Daughters Sunday School class. Mary was active in music at the church as a choir alto, bell choir member, and organist.  She was a member of the Holton Tourists’ Club, St. Cecilia’s Music Club, and Meriden Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include daughter Jane Willich, Manhattan, and sons Douglas Broadfoot (Jennifer) of Hesston, KS and Richard Broadfoot (Maya) of Portland, OR.  Other survivors include 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren plus one great-grandson due this July.  Mary was preceded in death in by her parents, husband Kenneth, son Michael, daughter-in-law Wanda, and siblings Elizabeth, Helen, Thomas, Donald, and Harry Lair Hart, Jr. 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 at Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton.  Cremation is planned.  Private family inurnment will be in Westmoreland City Cemetery.  Family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
