Marilyn Edith Oaks, 81, of Horton, Kansas passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Horton Community Hospital.

She was born on September 11, 1935 in rural Horton, Kansas the daughter of Otho C. and Mary I. Sleppy Small.

Marilyn graduated from A.C.C.H.S. in Effingham, Kansas. She then went to work as a seamstress at the Horton Garment Factory for years and then worked as a cashier at Duckwall’s and Pats’ Thriftway. Marilyn enjoyed crocheting, reading and spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. On October 24, 1954 she married Harrold “Dean” Oaks in Horton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Gary) Cox of Topeka, Kansas and Leisa (Tom) Halling of Denton, Kansas; son, Pete (Dee) Oaks of Horton, Kansas; two sisters, Lucille Brown of Muscotah, Kansas and Janet Christie of Horton, Kansas; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, son, Randy David Oaks and two sisters, Ruth Anna Speer and Shirley Swendson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton City Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Marilyn Oaks memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
