Herbert Lee "Sonny" Hiner, 87, of Atchison, Kansas passed away Monday, January 15, 2018 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at St. Joseph's Church with Fr. Richard Rocha as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish and Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited on Thursday, January, 18 at 7:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are requested to the Mexican Sisters of Leavenworth, KS or St. Benedict Parish and may be left in care of the funeral home. Sonny was born on August 17, 1930 in Rushville, MO, the son of the late Hadley and Dolly (Ruble) Hiner. He graduated from Rushville High School. Sonny married Cecelia Gonzales on August 3, 1968.

He was a custodian and retired from the Board of Education of Leavenworth, KS.

Sonny was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and took care of the late-night adoration and sacristan duties of the St. Benedict's Adoration Chapel for many years. He was a Fourth Degree Member of the William T. Jochems Knights of Columbus Council #1716.

Sonny loved music and playing his guitar; he played in many bands. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, birdwatching and most especially, spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife of forty-nine years, Cecelia (Gonzales) Hiner, one son, Rick, Liberty, MO, two grandsons, one great-grandson, brother, David (Janie) Hiner, sister, Nancy Jones, all of Atchison, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sue Frakes.
