Katherine "Katie" Bernice Holden, 92, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Apostolic Christian Retirement Village in Sabetha, Kansas. She was born on March 2, 1925 in Willis, Kansas the daughter of Chris and Barbro Haverstad Sernes. Kay, as she was known to her friends and Katie, as she was known to her family, graduated from Willis High School in 1943. The family moved to Horton, Kansas where she met and married Charles (Chuck) Holden on May 8, 1945. They resided in Wichita, Kansas until his death on April 23, 1989. She moved back to Horton a short time later and then to the Apostolic Christian Retirement Village in 2004. Kay enjoyed traveling and dining out with her friends and family and particularly enjoyed caring for small animals (most notably cats and dogs). She was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Everest, Kansas and after moving to Sabetha, a member of the First Lutheran Church of Sabetha and served as treasurer for the LWML for many years. She was a member of PEO, VFW Auxiliary and did volunteer work for the Humane Society. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Thelma Wenger, and brother, John Sernes and nephews, Steve Wenger and Chris Meyer. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Barbara Norris of Overland Park, Kansas, Maggie (Gary) Hartter of Lindsborg, Kansas, Paul (Lisa) Wenger of Erie, Kansas, David (Trudi) Wenger Eudora, Kansas, Mary (Mike) Lewallen of Newton, Kansas, 18 great nieces and nephews and 17 great great nieces and nephews. The family will greet friends from10:00 A.M. until 12:00 on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas and then go in procession to the Horton Cemetery for a graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, Everest, First Lutheran Church, Sabetha or the Humane Society in either Brown or Nemaha County which may be sent in care of Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, 909 Central Avenue, Horton, Kansas 66439.
