Born September 11, 1918 to Bertha and Thomas McCarthy, she was the 3rd of three children. When the Influenza made its way to Atchison, Jane’s beloved father was one of the casualties. Mom, Bertha, held the family tightly together, and they moved into the home that Jane lived in for 94 years until she needed extra help and had to move. Anyone who knew her knows her heart never left Atchison, in fact no matter where she lived or how often she was asked where she was from her response was always Atchison. Jane had many friends and was always willing to help others in need.

Jane was a member of St. Benedicts Church, Daughters of Isabella and a graduate of Mount St. Scholastica Academy. She worked for Snowden-Mize Sporting Goods in downtown Atchison for 30 years doing bookkeeping and secretarial duties before retiring in 1980 to take care of her mother. After her mother’s death Jane occupied her time volunteering at Mount St Scholastica, and also volunteered at the Muchnic Gallery for many years.

Jane loved the French language and was proficient in shorthand, in fact notes usually could be found that only she could decipher. Jane loved playing golf, especially at Pineview Country Club, along with softball and tennis she loved reading the Atchison Globe and anxiously awaited for her daily delivery, the crossword puzzles were always her favorite.

Jane’s family was most important in her life and always in her thoughts. She loved all of her family and friends and never left anyone out especially in her thoughts and her prayers.

Jane is survived by her brother Tom McCarthy of Boise, Idaho and nephew Tom McCarthy (wife Tracy), nieces Maria O’Neill (husband Bob), Jeanne Sorenson (husband Jack) and Martha Wright (husband Simon), 12 Great Nieces and Nephews and 19 Great Great Nieces and Nephews and 1 Great Great Great Nephew, and her cousin Rita Leonardi of Atchison.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and sister Dorothy Burnes.
