Roberta A. Metzger Kern, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, April 20, 2018 at her home.

She was born November 25, 1932 in Horton, KS, the oldest daughter of  Reinert and Petra Amanda Knudson Hammersmark. She was a 1950 graduate of Denton High School. She earned an R.N. degree at  Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in 1953. Roberta worked as a Registered Nurse at the Colmery-O’Neill Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Topeka, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Nortonville and a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of the church. She was an active member of the Stormont-Vail Nursing Alumni Association. She was married to Kenneth I. Metzger in 1954, they divorced in 1974. She was married to Gustav Andrew “Andy” Kern on January 6, 1979 in Nortonville, he preceded her in death on December 18, 2014.

She is survived by three daughters, Ann (Steve) Major, Oskaloosa, Amy (Allen Bender) Osborn, Oskaloosa, Beth Metzger, Lawrence, four sons, Kenneth (Carla) Metzger, Oskaloosa, David (Matt Miller) Metzger, Oskaloosa, John (Victoria) Metzger, Oskaloosa and Erik Metzger, San Francisco, CA, two step-children, Mike Kern, Stover, MO, Marsha Veal, Cripple Creek, CO, two sisters, Betty Denton, Denton, KS, Joan Luthro, Olathe, 19 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents , one grandson, Heath Carpenter, one great-grandson, Zachary Schrock and one step-son, George “Pat” Kern.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, April 26, 2018 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville. Burial at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa.
