Dorothy Aileen Hixson, 99 of rural Hiawatha went to be with her lord and savior on Friday September 28, 2018 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital surrounded by family.

She was the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Hillyer) Herman and was born May 6, 1919, the youngest of 3 children. She graduated 8th grade from Hart District #33, a one room school near Reserve, Kansas and graduated Hiawatha High School in 1937.

Dorothy worked at the Golden Rule clothing store in Hiawatha following graduation and assisted her grandmother at the Hiawatha Greenhouse.

She married her high school sweetheart, Dudley, March 12, 1938. To this union were born 2 children, Rance and Janiece. Dorothy and Dudley farmed with his parents, Grace and Dave Hixson, west of Hiawatha and owned the Massey Harris Implement dealership in Hiawatha. In 1955 they moved SW of Hiawatha and operated the Hixson Seed House while continuing to farm. Dorothy was the book keeper for the farm and businesses. She enjoyed the life of a farm wife and was involved in family life, church, and neighborhood clubs. Family first and she followed the lives and activities of her children and families. She was proud she remained in her home until the time of her death.

Dorothy was pre-deceased by her husband Dudley in 1995, her parents, Roy and Myrtle Herman and her brothers, Don and Carl, her son, Rance, and a great granddaughter Alli Smith.

She is survived by daughter, Janiece (Ken) Spencer of Hiawatha, daughter in law, Janet Hixson of Hiawatha, 5 grandchildren: Pam (Terry) Smith, Eric (Kerry) Hixson, Aileen (Kevin) Rost, Colette (Kris) Lehman, and Renee (Ben) Sperfslage, 12 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren and 1 step-great-great grandchild.

Celebration of life will be at the Bethany United Church of Christ on Tuesday October 2, 2018 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. until 6 pm. Monday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to service.
