John Spangler
Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton
Everest, KS

John Milton Spangler, 77, passed away in the Hiawatha Community Hospital on the evening of Thursday, October 25, 2018.  

He was born in Horton, KS on October 19, 1941, the son of Lloyd and Velma Chaffee Spangler.  He was raised on the Spangler family farm a mile southwest of Fairview and was a 1959 graduate of Fairview High School.  

He farmed for a short time in early adulthood, relocating in the mid 1960’s to Everest, KS where he would spend the remainder of his lifetime.  He worked early on for the grain elevator and gas station, ultimately settling on a career as a telephone man with the Rainbow Telephone Company, with whom he worked for over 30 years.  

He was an active and devoted member of the Everest community, serving for years on the city council, volunteer fire department, and a stint as mayor.  Many would recall him operating carnival rides during the Everest Fun Day or hanging flags and Christmas lights along the Everest Main Street during the holidays.  He will be remembered as a man of high integrity with a quick wit and charming sense of humor.

John is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda Spangler, his daughter, Lisa (Bob) Burns of Lathrop, MO, his sons, Scott (Malinda) Spangler of De Soto, KS, and Anthony (Margaret) Lockwood of Eudora, KS, and six grandchildren with a seventh on the way that he did not quite get to meet.  He is also survived by brothers, Lee (Janet) Spangler of Phoenix, AZ, Wayne Spangler of Wichita, KS, and Dave (Carol) Spangler of Fairview, KS.

Funeral Services are planned for 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton.  Pastor Shane Spangler will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Miller Cemetery.

Family Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday evening, October 29, 2018 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton.
