Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha
Horton and Hiawatha, KS

Lee Douglas Holtman, 56, of Horton/Hiawatha communities, died Saturday November 17, 2018, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Doug was born October 29, 1962 at Trenton, Missouri, one of six children born to Robert and Sylvia Alexander Holtman. The family moved in various places and grew up, attended school in Des Moines, Iowa.

He married Carrie Ann Krebs, April 15, 1995. They made Hiawatha their home all of their married life where they raised their family. They enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with their children and family. She died unexpectedly February 26, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother Richard; sister Chris; grand-daughters: Layla and Carrie Ann Holtman; niece Shawna Geniuk; nephew Mark Holtman.

Doug worked at whatever job was available at the time: was a metal scrapper, various odds and ends, and mowed many lawns in town until his health failed. He raised a huge garden of which he took very good care of. Doug was very gracious and shared all of his produce with whoever was interested. His take on life was just that: he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and he would do without. Doug wasn’t necessarily involved in the community, however, he was always out and about and enjoyed visiting with whoever he would bump into. He did keep up on political events and was knowledgeable and kept current on local and national issues. His favorite time of the year was Christmas--he started shopping in August!

Survivors include his daughters: Jody Dexter (Tyler) of Topeka, and Jessica Focht (Keith) of Horton Holtman; sisters: Gayle Barnett of Hiawatha, Mary Pine of Port St. Lucie, FL; brother Darrell Holtman of Falls City, NE; grandchildren: Brantley River Focht, Spencer Owen Dexter, Ashton Rhine Dexter; with many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Doug’s life is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Fisher Community Center.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Chapel Oaks Funeral Home to help with service costs.
