Major Robert Frederick Layton

Major Robert Frederick Layton, 85, of Denison, KS, went to be with his lord and savior on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Holton Community Hospital. He was born October 11, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Robert Edward and Alyce Rae (Schulte) Layton.

Bob lived in the Denison community since 1986 and had previously lived in the Wichita area from 1975 – 1986. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Bob served for over 21 years, retiring as Major in 1976. He worked for the state of Kansas for over 15 years assisting veterans with employment opportunities.  He also served as the Mayor of Denison.

He was a member of Mayetta Christian Church, Holton V.F.W. Post 1367, Holton American Legion Post 44 and the Holton Lions Club.

Bob married Mary Edith Gilliland on December 28, 1955 in Denison. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1999; after over 43 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Edward Layton on April 18, 2009.

Survivors include his caretakers, Fred and Karen Binkley of Denison, KS and Irvin and Meda Scarlett of Gardner, KS and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow in the Denison Cemetery.
