Mildred “Millie” Walker, 97, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Monday, July 29, 2019 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Mildred was born at home in rural Sabetha on November 19, 1921 the daughter of Glenn John and Minnie Gertrude (Nohl) Walker. Mildred graduated from Sabetha High School in May 1940. In May 1952 she graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree. During her career, Mildred took one sabbatical taking classes at the University of Colorado. She later went on to take another sabbatical and graduated from Penn State with a Master’s Degree. Millie started her career in K-State Research & Extension working in Mankato, Kansas as a County Extension Agent from 1952-1955. She also worked as a County Extension Agent in Marysville, Kansas from 1955-1956, and then in the Kansas State University office in Manhattan as a State Consumer Economic Specialist from 1956-1983.

During her career, Mildred loved teaching children and adults alike all across Kansas. She was known for her skills in working with individuals on finances, leadership, and nutrition. Adults learned many homemaking skills with a major focus on consumer economics. She traveled the state helping families with their personal budgets and finances. Millie loved using different communication styles including television and a regular weekly radio show. By retirement, she had written and done several thousand radio shows that were heard all over Kansas. She also increased her audience by working with County Extension Agents who would then share that information with children, homemakers, and families in all 50 counties in Kansas. When she retired from Kansas State University, she had received many local, state, and national recognitions and awards.

One of Mildred’s joys was going to Rock Springs Ranch camp south of Junction City. She enjoyed the beauty of the Flint Hills and the enjoyment and skills the camp gave to children from 7 years old to 18 years old. She was happy to be a Friend of 4-H and support the Kansas 4-H Foundation.

Mildred attended the Baptist Church in Sabetha and the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha. While living in Manhattan Millie was active in the Trinity Presbyterian Church. Mildred was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. She delivered Meals on Wheels, and was an American Cancer Society volunteer. Millie loved being with her family and enjoyed going to all kinds of family activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Irene Williams and Wilma Strahm; and her nephew, Don Strahm.

She is survived by her nieces, Carol Strahm, Becky Koonce, Pam Sutton, and Debbie Hail; and also her many great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to service time at the funeral home. Interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery.
