Joseph Eugene Edie, 88, of Highland, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

Joe was born on March 11, 1931 in Wheelers Grave, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to Archer and Lena Smith Edie.

He married Barbara Jean Collins on May 19, 1951 in Sparks, Kansas. They made their home in White Cloud, Kansas, moving to Highland in 1972. He was a member of the White Cloud Christian Church.

He worked most of his life for the Doniphan County road and bridge department. He later became the foreman there and  also became a Doniphan County Commissioner until he retired. He loved gardening, and fishing but most of all the country music. He taught himself to play guitar at a young age playing for area square dances. Later he formed a band, bringing his children into it. Where they also played gospel music at various churches and different functions.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, his parents, a son, Michael Wayne, his siblings, brother, Kenneth Edie, sisters, Violet Ptomey and Ethel (Alfrey) Shaw. Survivors include a daughter, Charlene (Jim) Twombly of White Cloud, Kansas; two sons, Larry (Sharon) Edie of Highland, Kansas and Robert (Jackie) Edie of Highland, Kansas; 8 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends Wednesday evening at Community Of Christ Church in Fanning, Kansas from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. A graveside service will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday morning at the Highland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Joe Edie memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas.
