Richard " Dick" Farwell

Richard “Dick” Pelton Farwell, 87 of rural DuBois, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Crestview Nursing Home in Seneca, Kansas.

Dick was born to Albert Clyde and Laura Velma (Pelton) Farwell on August 30, 1932 on the family farm northeast of DuBois, Nebraska, the ninth of ten children.  He graduated from DuBois high School in 1950. While in high school, he enjoyed playing basketball and town team baseball.  Dick served his country in the U.S. Army from December 10, 1952 to September 22, 1954.

Dick married Doris Jean Hess on October 24, 1954 at Friedens United Church of Christ.  He was baptized at Friedens on March 22, 1955 and became a member on March 27, 1955. Dick served on the church council and volunteered with the annual ice cream social and caring for the church property.  He was also a member of DuBois Post 39 American Legion.

Dick and Doris worked together farming, raising cattle, hogs and crops.  They raised one daughter and three sons and enjoyed 65 years of marriage.  Dick’s hobbies included woodworking, motor coach tours, playing Som-R-Set and attending children’s and grandchildren’s activities.  He was interested in computers and was able to teach himself to create spreadsheets and use other software. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lavinna Thiemann, Margaret Korber, Horace “Stub” Farwell, Laura Meier, Jennie Boehmer, Alberta Koester, Ida Kanel Gilbert, Dean Farwell and Roy Farwell.

He is survived by his wife Doris, daughter Jeanne (Perry) Kitchens of Bennington, NE, sons, Gary (Marianne) Farwell of DuBois, NE, Randy (Deb) Farwell of Lincoln, NE, Russell (Cody) Farwell of DuBois, NE, 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Services 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Friedens U.C.C. Church, rural Bern, Kansas.  Officiating Reverend Bob Colerick.  Visitation on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska.  Interment at Friedens U.C.C. Cemetery, rural Berm, Kansas.  Memorial to Friedens U.C.C. Church or Fisher Center for Alzheimer Research Foundation.  On line condolence may be left at www.wherrymortuary.com.  Military honors provided by the Nebraska Army National Guard Honor Guard.
