J.D. Nelson
Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton
formerly of Whiting, KS

J. D. Nelson, 66, formerly of Whiting, died Sunday, July 26, 2020 at home in Holton.

He was born February 12, 1954 in Kansas City, KS. His parents were James Edward and  Virginia Segrist Nelson.

J. D. worked as a welder at BMB Manufacturing, later the Alamo Group, in Holton.  He then worked for Double Check, Schendel Pest Control, and for the last thirteen years for Goodyear Tire Company in Topeka. 

He was a volunteer firefighter at Denison and Whiting, and spent many summers umpiring baseball games.  He was also in a local bowling league for many years.

J.D.’s former wife and mother to their children is Kathryn Robertson.

He was preceded in death by his father, a brother Don “Buddy” Wesselman, and two sisters, Pam Reno and Jackie Begesse.  

Survivors include his girlfriend, Jane Strahm, his mother, Virginia Nelson, Holton; two sons, David Nelson and Zachary Nelson, Denison; two daughters, Stephanie McCammon (Chad) and Jennifer Hall, all of Holton; one brother, Rod Stroup (Sharon), Holton; two sisters, Rose Ener (Claude), Pasadena, TX and Gayla Gurley (Vaughn), Lake Murvaul, TX; one brother-in-law, Herman Begesse, Everest; one sister-in-law, Shelly Slaughter, Bonner Springs; twelve grandchildren, Brian Nelson, Brandi, Alyssa and Tristen McCammon, Hunter, Gauge and Gracie Nelson, Chandler Savage, Braelynne and Adelynne Nelson, and Nivayah and Le’Roy Hall, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30th at the Spring Hill Cemetery at Whiting.  Those wanting to go in procession to the cemetery can meet by 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton.  J.D. will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the J.D.
