Gregory J. Ramirez, 97, Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020 at University of Kansas Health System St Francis Campus in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born on May 24, 1923 in Horton, Kansas, the son of Bicente and Monica Rojas Ramirez. He grew up and attended school in Horton. During WWll, he served in the Signal Corp for the U.S. Army in the European and Pacific theatres. He also served in the Kansas National Guard in Horton, Kansas. He married Evelyn Jeannotte on September 6, 1947 at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Horton, Kansas. He worked for Rainbow Telephone Company, Everest, Kansas, for over 35 years. After retiring he worked for the Senior Center in Horton for 18 years as a driver of the bus transporting seniors. He was a lifelong member of Horton American Legion Post # 415, VFW and Kickapoo American Legion Post #415.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn of 69 years, his daughter Gloria Meerpohl, his son- in-law Mitch Battese, both parents, two sisters: Patricia Ortez, Mary Ortez; four brothers: Antonio Ramirez, Aristeo Ramirez, John Ramirez and Tony Ramirez, grandson, Nathan Cortez and three grandsons and one great grandson who died at childbirth.

He is survived by four daughters, Patty Battese of Lawrence, Kansas, Barbara (Jim) Tucker of Baldwin City, Kansas, Mona (Chris) Cortez of Horton, Kansas and Marlise (Kenny) Wilson of Horton, Kansas; three sons, Lawrence (Leigh) of Independence, Missouri, Steve (Carla) Ramirez of Lawrence, Kansas, Vincent (Stefanie) Ramirez of Casa Grande, Arizona and son-in- law Mike Meerpohl of Holton, Kansas; twenty grandchildren, forty two great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Greg and Evelyn loved having large numbers of family and friends at their home on the hill east of Horton.

A rosary will be recited at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church with a funeral mass to follow at 10:30 A.M. The family requests to please wear masks and practice social distancing. Friends may call at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, in Horton, Tuesday.  Burial will be at St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery.
