Diann Mendez Windmeyer Hall, 68, of Topeka, KS, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS after fighting a month-long battle with COVID-19.  Her son Shane Windmeyer and daughter Jennifer Windmeyer were by her side. 

Diann was born October 29, 1952 in Hiawatha, KS, the daughter of Joaquin and Jessie (Roubidoux) Mendez. She graduated Hiawatha High School in 1970 and attended Highland Community College.

In 1968, Diann’s first job was working in the sorghum fields as a teenager. She began waitressing at Tick Tock Cafe in Hiawatha, KS. In September of 1973, she married Frederick Windmeyer (deceased May 18, 2003).  

A member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas & Nebraska, Diann worked in the tribal office bookkeeping and writing grants to benefit the tribe. In 1989 she moved to Graham Texas where she was a store clerk at Mobley’s.  Diann returned to Topeka, KS in 2000 and was a caregiver for the elderly.  After losing her first husband to a drunk driver, Diann married on November 1, 2009 to Ray Hall.

Diann lived life to the fullest and knew no stranger.  Her whole life she treasured family and especially her kids Shane and Jennifer. She loved shopping, fast pitch softball during her younger years, going out for dinner and enjoyed sailing on a cruise ship. This time of year she received so much joy giving Christmas presents and having her kids and family home with her. 

Survivors include her husband Ray; her son Shane (spouse Thomas Feldman) of Charlotte, NC and daughter Jennifer (spouse Carrie Boggess) of Fort Worth, TX; 4 sisters, Delores Waite of Hiawatha, KS, Josephine Janis of Powhatan, KS, Nancy Cappleman of Holton, KS and Paula Podell of Buffalo Grove, IL; 5 brothers, Joaquin “Jake” Mendez, Jr. of Florida, Anthony Mendez, Sr. of Hiawatha, KS, Alvino Mendez of Hiawatha, KS, Timothy Mendez of Holton, KS and Paul Mendez of Hiawatha, KS.  Preceded in death by her parents, first husband and sister Tina Greemore.

Memorial graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, KS.  A calling for family and friends will occur Monday, December 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, December 29 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, KS.  To stop the spread of this deadly virus, the family asks that people do not congregate together. Face masks and social distancing are required.
