Larry John Savage, 78, of Bernalillo, New Mexico, formerly of Soldier and Holton, KS, passed away February 23, 2021 at his home. His wife was at his side. He was born November 25, 1942 in Wetmore and was the son of Lawrence W. and Kathryn (Patch) Savage who preceded him in death; also, a step-daughter, Penny Sue Smith.

Larry graduated from Solider High School in 1960 and later from Jet Mechanical School in 1962. He lived in Newton, KS for 17 years; Emporia, KS for 2 years; 13 months in Redlands, CA; 2 years in Holton, KS; 12 years in Albuquerque, NM; 21 years in Soldier, KS; then, back to Albuquerque, New Mexico for 5 years.

Larry worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a machinist; later promoted to Supervisor and Management for 18 years at the Santa Fe Shops; and Assistant Manager of Maintenance of Way Department for the whole system at Santa Fe ATSF Railroad.

Larry was a member of International Association of Machinist; Narve Veterans of Fraternal Order of Eagles; American Legion Riders; and volunteered with Rural Water District #3 of Holton, KS.

He married Linda R. Smith on April 14, 1979 in Emporia, KS. They celebrated 41 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; 2 sons, Larry D. Savage (Mary) of Soldier, KS and Alvin L. Savage (Tena) of Newton, KS; 2 daughters, Susan Redger (Rick) of Newton, KS and Tammie Schmidt (Jim) of Newton, KS; step-son, Jim Rogers (Debbie) of Wichita, KS; 2 brothers, Claude Savage (Pat) of Brea, CA and Lyle Savage of Mayetta, KS; 2 step- sisters, Deloris Beam of Circleville, KS and Diana Wilson (Willy) of Holton, KS; 2 step-brothers, Danny VanDonge (Shirley) of Havensville, KS and Donnie VanDonge (Elvie) of Topeka, KS; 16 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry will lie in state Monday afternoon, March 1, 2021 and Tuesday, March 2, 2021 until 6:00 p.m.   Private Family Funeral will be Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with Public Burial at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Holton V.F.W. Post 1367 and sent to the Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
