Johny “John” Martin, age 79, of Effingham, Kansas, died Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.

Graveside services will be Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Effingham, KS. No formal visitation is scheduled as John will lie in state on Friday Nov. 19th at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home where friends may call after 11:00 A.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to the ACCHS Drama Department or Freedom Hospice (Hiawatha, KS) and may be left in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom funeral care has been entrusted.  

Johny Orville Warner Martin was born on November 24, 1941, Pixley, California, the son of Rosebud “Fuller” and Ethel (Chaney) Martin. He attended schools in Arkansas.

John and Patricia Canterberry were united in marriage on January 26, 1962 in Wesley, Arkansas. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in January 2022.

John started his work history helping build a feed lot in Nebraska. He then became employed with Weyerhaeser Lumber in Oregon before being transferred to Wright City, Oklahoma. John worked for Weyerhaeser for 26 years until his retirement.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wright City, Oklahoma. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and welding. John was a true handy man, there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix ranging from electrical to plumbing and all things in between.  He had a huge heart and was always willing to help someone in need. John was extremely proud of his family.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Pat Martin, of the home in Effingham, KS; a daughter, Melinda (Lee) Oswald, Effingham, KS; a son, Johnny (Donna) Martin, Effingham, KS; two sisters, Freda Bear, NV, Shirley Ann (Mike) Gomez, Big Fort, MT; two brothers, Willie “Maxie” (Mary Kay) Martin, Black Foot, ID; James Alfred Martin, Post Falls, ID; five grandchildren, Tricia (Robbie) Parker, Sarah (Phil) Sinclair, Phillip (Katie) Martin, Derek Oswald, Trevor Oswald, and six great grandchildren, Blake and Brooklynn Parker, Annabelle and Joseph Sinclair, Valerie Oswald and Camden Martin.

He is preceded in death by four sisters, Sarah Margaret, Lillian Marie, Ida Lee, Mary Collen and two brothers, Rosebud and George Andrew.
