Mary Hooper
Hiawatha , KS

 Mary K. Hooper, 87, of Maple Grove Apartments in Hiawatha, died Sunday evening, August 12, 2012, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where she had been a patient a few days.

Mary was born at White Cloud, Kansas, October 18, 1924, one of six children of the late Martin and Emma Rosenberger Hayes and had lived in the northeast Kansas area all of her life.  She grew up on a farm near White Cloud, attended Hill Top country school prior to graduating from White Cloud High School.  Mary worked as a sales clerk for the Ben Franklin Store in Hiawatha for 25 years.

Mrs. Hooper was a long time member of First Christian Church of Hiawatha; the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210 of Hiawatha.

She married Arthur “Delaine” Hooper, June 12, 1944, at Hiawatha.  They made their home in Hiawatha for many years.  After Delaine’s heart attack, they were very dedicated about a daily walk.  After his death, she was still very faithful about her daily walk.  He died March 24, 2004.

She was also preceded in death by a son Gary Hooper, a daughter Linda Kay Stich; three brothers:  Thomas Hayes, Martin Hayes, Jr., Robert Hopper; two sisters:  Margaret Harness and Opal (Polly) Windmeyer.

Survivors include a daughter Wanda (Robert) Jenkins of Troy; a daughter in law Angie Foster of Topeka; and a son in law Ron Stich of Topeka, KS; grandchildren:  Todd Hooper, Randy Stich, Melissa McCall, Taira Crocker, Katy Stich, Travis Jenkins, Michael Jenkins, Bethany Jenkins; and 7great-grandchildren. 

A celebration of Mary’s life is planned at 10 a.m. Friday, August 17, at the First Christian Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor Traci Matherly officiating.  Interment will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. Thursday.  No family visitation is being planned.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.
