Velma Toothaker
Onaga , KS

 ONAGA – Velma M. Toothaker, 97, of Onaga, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.    

She was born June 28, 1915 near Onaga, the daughter of Ben and Mathilda “Tillie” Wege Tessendorf.  Velma worked in the laundry department at Community Hospital, Onaga for forty-five years, retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onaga and the Ladies Guild at the church.  She loved to can and crochet.  She had made many afghans for family members and church friends.

Velma married Harold Wesley Toothaker on July 22, 1937 in Topeka.  He died July 23, 1982.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Tessendorf and Clarence Tessendorf, and two sisters, Leona Nolte and Alice Nelson.

 Survivors include a son, Dean Toothaker and wife, Creta, Wamego; two daughters,

Judy Michels, Wamego, and Shirley A. Noland and husband, Robert W., Seneca; a sister,

Lucille Manthe, Shell Knob, MO, ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and ten


 Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25th, 2012 at the First Congregational UCC.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.  Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery.  Velma will lie in state Friday afternoon and evening at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga.  Memorials are suggested to Community Hospital, Onaga, or the First Congregational UCC, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
