Cooper Nuclear Waste may be Headed to Texas
COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) _ Low-level radioactive waste from Nebraska
Public Power District's nuclear facility may soon be heading to
Texas.
The Columbus Telegram reports that the district's board has
approved an agreement to send a portion of the low-level waste from
Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville to a storage facility
outside Andrews, Texas.
The deal, which still must be finalized, would include
radioactive resins, filters and other equipment. The waste would be
sent to the Texas Compact Waste Disposal Facility.
Alan Dostal, corporate nuclear business manager at NPPD, says
the district hasn't been able to dispose of certain low-level
radioactive waste for years after a failed government effort to
create storage facilities.
Currently, NPPD stores low-level waste from Cooper Nuclear
Station in on-site pools that also hold used nuclear fuel rods.
