Seneca Rejects County Dispatch Offer
04/19/2012

The Seneca City Council has rejected the latest offer from Nemaha County for providing dispatch services to the city.

The county proposed that the city pay 19.6 percent of the cost of dispatch salaries and benefits, or $45,000 per year.

Mayor Joe Mitchell said Wednesday evening he feels the cost is too high considering city residents already pay county taxes for law enforcement services.

Nemaha County Commissioner Mark Wessel, who was present at the meeting, will go back to his governing body to come up with a counter offer.

The city paid just over $70,000 last year to the county for dispatching services.

In other business, the council approved an agreement with Wilson and Company engineers of Salina to provide engineering services for a drainage improvement project on U.S. 36 between 1st and 11th Streets at a cost of $83,322.

The total project cost is estimated at nearly $924,000. The city has been awarded a $700,000 grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation to help fund the project.

A low bid was accepted from RL Tieman Company of Beatrice, Nebraska for curb and gutter replacement on selected streets for $56,000.  The bid was among four received. The city had budgeted $60,000 for the project.

And the council accepted the resignation of police officer Wayne Alley and voted to advertise to fill the vacancy.  Alley plans to move to Nebraska where his wife works as a park ranger.
