Employee Suffers 1st Degree Burns in Small Fire

A 28-year-old employee of an Atchison convenience store is recovering from burns sustained in an isolated fire in the back room of the store Tuesday afternoon.

Atchison Fire Captain Ted Graf says crews were called to the Surf-N-Go convenience store around 1:16 this afternoon.

The victim, Teresa Russell, was then transported by Atchison EMS to the Atchison Hospital where she is currently receiving (received) treatment.

Captain Graf credits quick thinking as a reason the incident didn’t spiral out of control.

He says the employees believed there were not any patrons in the store during the incident.
