The driver of a Ford Escort was taken to the hospital in St. Joseph after his car ran off the road south of Forest City Thursday evening.
The Missouri State Patrol reports that 27-year-old Jeffrey Verbick of Oregon, Missouri, was driving southbound on Route T, two miles south of Forest City shortly after 6:00 p.m. Thursday, when he came to a bridge where a farm tractor was occupying all lanes. In an attempt to stop before colliding with the tractor, the patrol says Verbick stepped on the brakes, causing the car to leave the roadway.
The Escort struck two signs and the bridge rail before coming to rest on its wheels in a grassy area parallel to the road. Verbick was taken by ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The Holt County Sheriff’s Department assisted the State Patrol at the scene of the accident.
