Hiawatha kindergarten teacher Brenda Schuetz has been named as the "Hiawatha USD 415 Teacher of the Year” for 2011-2012.
Schuetz was recognized at the beginning of Monday’s Hiawatha School Board meeting with a plaque, gift certificate and flowers.
Each year, the teachers in USD 415 select one of their peers for the recognition. The teachers in each building select a candidate from among the teachrs in their building. The entire teaching staff then votes on the three candidates, choosing one as the Hiawatha Teacher of the Year.
Besides Schuetz, nominated for the honor were high school math teacher Ann Severin and middle school art teacher Cindy Bicker.
Schuetz began her tenure with USD 415 in 1988 as a 7th grade science and social science teacher at Robinson Middle School. She held several other teaching positions before becoming a full-time kindergarten teacher in 1995.
