Atchison to Repair Manhole
05/22/2012

In a light meeting Monday evening of the Atchison City Commission, Commissioners awarded a bid to SAK Construction to repair a pipe and rehabilitate a manhole near Bradken.

The south headworks 32 by 48 inch egg-shaped pipe and manhole was believed to be constructed before 1930 and would have cost 300 to 500 thousand dollars to replace the stretch entirely.

Commissioners approved the 198 thousand 300 dollar project four to zero.

Commissioner Jack Bower was absent from the meeting.

FEMA will fund 75 percent of 189 thousand 227 dollars, leaving the city with around a 30 thousand dollar tab that will come from sewer C.I.P.

Commissioners also heard a concern from a citizen about feeling unsafe at the Commercial Mall intersections of fifth and sixth streets.

He said vehicle are not yielding to pedestrians, even though there are signs mandated by state law to stop if pedestrians are in the striped intersection.

Police Chief Mike Wilson said they will put extra attention to the intersections as necessary.

Also, the first workshop for the 2013 budget will take place the evening of May 30th at five.
