Mound City’s street paving project is progressing well, but the contractor has had to temporarily stop work – and the project will cost a little more than originally thought.
Bob Burnett with Snyder and Associates met with the City Council last week to discuss the street project.
It was noted during the meeting that three streets that were slated to receive a one-inch asphalt overlay inadvertently received a two-inch overlay. That increased the cost of the project by approximately $19,000.
The extra asphalt was added on 6th and 7th Streets west of Railroad, and Grand Avenue from Mound Street to High Street. Burnett told the council they could either accept the added asphalt and cost, switch some of the remaining streets from a two-inch to a one-inch overlay, or turn down the added cost and have the contractor, Keller Construction, remove the extra asphalt.
Following discussion, the council agreed to accept the added paving.
The council also agreed to amend the street resurfacing contract by adding a two-inch overlay on 6th Street from State to Savannah, at an estimated cost of $12,000.
City Clerk Patsy Smith says the paving is approximately 70-percent complete, though work has ground to a halt. The work stopped after Keller Construction had one of its paving machines break down. They’ll resume work after the equipment is repaired or they can lease other equipment.
Aldermen approved an ordinance to finance the street-paving project. The council decided last month to finance the project by borrowing from existing city funds rather than issuing bonds. That is expected to save the city $134,000 in interest costs. The city can still issue the bonds, which voters approved in April, at a later date if needed.
