Local Name Included On Gun Lawsuit
07/21/2014

(KNZA)--Hiawatha Mayor Crosby Gernon is among five plaintiffs listed in a lawsuit filed against Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Kansas Attorney Derek Schmidt, stemming from gun-rights legislation passed in 2013.

According to the Topeka-Capital-Journal, the lawsuit, filed July 9th in U.S. District Court by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, was brought on behalf of Kansans who had personal experience with gun violence or expressed concern about public safety under the state law.

Gernon, in an email, says he signed on as a plaintiff as a private citizen, and not in his Mayoral capacity. He declined to comment further on the matter because it's a pending lawsuit.

The lawsuit is in response to the Kansas Second Amendment Protection Act which declares that guns manufactured and possessed only in Kansas are exempt from federal gun restrictions.

The lawsuit claims the law is unconstitutional.

The Governor and Attorney General plan to challenge the lawsuit.
