Tragic End To Missouri River Search
07/22/2014

(KAIR)--The search for an Atchison man who disappeared into the Missouri River early Sunday morning has ended after officials locate his body not far from where he entered the river.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, officers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol spotted 23-year-old Joshua Jones several miles south of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge just after 1:45 Tuesday afternoon.

Jones will now be transported to a pathologist in Kansas City for examination. His family has been notified, and Wilson says officials are now focusing on answering any questions they may have regarding the matter.

A motorist spotted Jones on the bridge early Sunday morning and notified authorities from Buchanan County. Upon arrival, they discovered that he was no longer on the bridge, and started to search along the river.

Crews from multiple agencies in both Kansas and Missouri have been using boats to assist in the search since it started.

Wilson says it is unknown at this time how Jones disappeared into the river, but the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
