NRD Meets with Barada area Residents About Well Problems

(KTNC)--The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board heard an update Thursday night on a recent meeting NRD staff had with residents in the Barada area.
NRD General Manager Bob Hilske says they were contacted two or three weeks ago about problems people were having with domestic wells either being lowered or going dry. Hilske says at this point they don’t know much about what is causing the problems, but they're working with landowners to register wells to determine where the wells are located. He says they'll monitor the aquifer and well depth in that area, as he says they don't have much background information to work with.
Approximately 20 to 30 Barada area residents attended the meeting, though Hilske says they don’t know exactly how widespread the problem is or what is causing the problems.
Hilske says it’s not likely that irrigation wells are the problem. He says two irrigation wells were dug in the area in the past year, but they are three or four miles from the wells that are experiencing the problems, and that is a long distance for an irrigation well to be affecting a domestic well.
The area in question is in the area from the Nemaha-Richardson County Line toward Barada, north of Verdon.
Hilske says they hope to look at some of the well logs to gauge the depth of the aquifer and get a better idea what may be causing the problem within the next couple of months.
