(KNZA)--Brown County based law enforcement agencies are receiving federal funds earmarked to upgrade computer and video equipment.

That word comes in a press release from the office of  Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt which says the funds are made available through the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Program.

The top recipient is the Horton Police Department, awarded more than $24,000 for three in-car cameras, seven body cameras, and a server for video storage.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office receives $9,500 to purchase body cameras, a computer, and digital storage.

The Hiawatha Police Department was awarded more than $8,000 for computers to aid in reporting crime information and tracking collecting digital evidence.

The federal funds are awarded by the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, which is chaired by Schmidt.

He says they are “pleased to offer these grants to support local priorities,” as “equipping local law enforcement offices with modern technology is key to improving public safety” in the state of Kansas.
