(KNZA)--A Brown County bridge replacement project has been selected for federal funding.
That word came Monday, after the County Commission was notified by the Kansas Department of Transportation that the replacement of a bridge on Falcon Road, northeast of Fairview over Mulberry Creek, has been selected for the Fiscal Year 2017 Off-System Bridge Program. The near 72 foot truss bridge was built in 1930.
Federal aid for the project has been set at $361,000. Federal funding will cover 80 percent of the construction cost, with Brown County responsible for the remaining 20 percent plus engineering design, right-of-way acquisition and any utility re-location.
The project is expected to be let in October 2016.
Commissioners signed the paperwork agreeing to provide the local share of the project cost.
The bridge is one of only 18 selected by KDOT, which received 63 applications for funding assistance.
In other business, County Appraiser Jeff Ball introduced to Commissioners new data collector Yvonne Murrow, of Hiawatha. Murrow started work October 6th. Ball says she was among four applicants interviewed for the part-time position.
