The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors received an update on the Buck and Duck Creek Watershed project during last week’s meeting.
NRD Resource Specialist Shawn Kreienhop explained the status of the cost share program underway in the watershed. He said that three of seven planned flood and grade stabilization structures are now built, and two more are in the design stage.
In addition, Kreienhop said over 2,000 acres of tile terraces and 150 acres of grade terraces are in place, which is about half of what is expected. Plans call for all work to be finished by the summer of 2013.
Meanwhile, work on the Buck Creek Watershed Dam is approximately 70-percent complete. The NRD Board was told the contractor, Shanahan Brothers Construction of Lincoln, has been trying to obtain performance and payment bonds to replace those that are no longer in force due to the insolvency of the insurance company that issued the original bonds. After consulting with the District’s attorney, the NRD Board voted to continue completion of the project without the bonds.
In other business, the Nemaha NRD Board approved a revision to the mowing contract with Stan Borcher. The revised contract adds areas of Iron Horse Trail Lake – which was reopened since the original contract was signed – to the areas to be mowed. Borcher agreed to add the new areas at a rate equal to that assessed for mowing the rest of the park.
And the board accepted the donation of approximately 20 white pine trees for the District’s public recreation areas. Board member Bruce Walker donated the 8-to-12 foot tall trees. The board accepted the donation and authorized the expenditure of up to $3,000 to transplant the trees.
