OPPD Offers to Pay Customers
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ The Omaha Public Power District is offering
to pay customers who will let the utility manage their air
conditioning units on peak demand days.
The program is designed to help reduce peak demand for
electricity by 50 megawatts this summer.
OPPD customers who join this program must allow the utility to
install a control device on their air conditioner.
Then on as many as 12 days when electricity demand is highest,
OPPD may use the device to limit when the air conditioning runs.
OPPD says it will cycle participants air conditioning on and off in
15-minute intervals between 4:30-7:30 p.m.
OPPD will pay customers $30 for signing up and $20 for each
additional year of participation.
This program is expected to cut about 15 megawatts of demand.
