Analysts are still predicting consumers will pay as much as $4.25 for a gallon of gasoline by Memorial Day. Rose White with Triple-A Nebraska says there are a few things car owners can do to help save on fuel. The first is to avoid slamming on the brakes and to avoid jackrabbit starts. ( PLAY AUDIO :08 )
White says experts report an idling engine burns about a half-gallon of gas every 30 minutes so if the car doesn't need to run, shut it off. ( PLAY AUDIO :09 )
White says every time a driver pulls up to a gas pump they should check their tire pressure. She also says getting weight out of the vehicle can help mileage as well. ( PLAY AUDIO :09 )
White says to save a few gallons of gas it is a good idea to combine trips by stopping at the grocery store on the way home from work instead of making an extra trip on the weekend. Triple - A also recommends removing roof-top cargo containers as they can cause wind resistance.
