Huskers Sweep Buckeyes in Big 10 Baseball
Columbus, Ohio - With the Ohio State Buckeyes riding a seven-game winning streak going into the day, the Nebraska baseball team (25-13, 7-5 Big Ten) swept a double header from the Buckeyes on Sunday to win its first conference road series since taking 2-of-3 from Baylor in Waco, Texas, during the 2008 season.
Nebraska used three home runs to win game one, 5-4, and dominated the Buckeyes in game two, 17-9, to take the three-game series after dropping the opener on Friday night.
Josh Scheffert powered the Huskers with a 3-for-6 performance in game two. He hit a home run in his third straight game and drove in a career-high seven runs; topping his previous high of four. Richard Stock was also tough on the Buckeyes' pitchers with a career-high four hits, including his team-leading 10th and 11th doubles.
Zach Hirsch improved to 4-2 on the season and picked up his second win during Big Ten play with six innings of work in the start. The sophomore lefty limited the Buckeyes to two runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out two.
Nebraska built a 17-4 lead after eight innings before Ohio State scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin in game two.
In the first game, Kale Kiser and Kash Kalkowski each hit two-run home runs and Josh Scheffert hit a solo shot to accounted for all five of Nebraska's runs in a 5-4 Husker win. Dylan Vogt got the win in relief of starter Brandon Pierce to improve to 2-1 on the year and Travis Huber picked up his sixth save of the year with a shutout ninth.
With no mid-week game for the Huskers, NU will get in some extra practice this week in preparation for the Purdue Boilermakers, who sit atop the Big Ten standings. The Huskers and Boilermakers open a three-game series on Friday night at Hawks Field in front of a national-television audience on the Big Ten Network, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The two teams are also scheduled to meet at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday and 12:05 p.m. on Sunday, with games two and three streamed live on HuskersNSide.
