Shutdown of Ks Vehicle Services May 1-7
Kansans are urged to renew their expiring driver’s licenses and license plate tags this week in preparation for a week-long shut down of state vehicle services as the state implements a new motor vehicle system authorized by the state legislature in 2009. From May 1-7 the systems will be down and state driver licensing offices will be closed during that time. County treasurers‘ offices will be able to conduct non-vehicle related business, but will not be able to process vehicle tags.
During that week, the department will be transferring 6.8 million records onto the new system, which will replace three aging mainframe systems which are three decades old. The new system will incorporate driver licensing, motor vehicle titling and registration and inventory management with a single, modern system that is easier to use, maintain and enhance.
To help reduce problems the Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles, is suggesting that those whose last names starting with C or D should renew their vehicle tags before Monday, April 30. Anyone whose license expires May 1-7 should be sure to renew their licenses no later than this Friday ( April 27).
For those turning 21 during the shutdown, the state provides an automatic 45 day extension to allow them to have a valid driver’s license and a chance to get their new license later in the month at any of the state’s 111 driver licensing stations.
