This past Friday the board of directors for the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) meet to address multiple topics for the state of high school sports and activities in Kansas, but there was one topic on the agenda that was hot topic. That was the potential shuffle of schools in a possible reclassification starting from 4A down.
The board of directors decided to put the proposed reclassification up to vote to the schools that would be affected by it, if it were to take affect. So, over the coming weeks KSHSAA will send each 4A-1A school a ballot to vote on the proposal of the reclassification. Principals and superintendents are to fill out the ballot and return it to KSHSAA by mid-June.
The proposal for changes to the current classification system for football are that 4A which currently has 64 schools be taken down to 48 schools, thus moving 16 schools down a classification to 3A. The bottom 16 schools currently at 3A level would be bumped down to 2A, then bumping the bottom 16 2A schools to 1A. If the proposal is based it would restructure the playoff systems for each classification, also.
Main emphasis of the reclassification is to try an even out the discrepancies of enrollment numbers between the top and bottom teams in each classification, which currently set at wide margins.
Classification system has been an ongoing issue and this latest proposal, is latest to try and even out the level of competition.
----Other notable outcomes of Board of Directors meeting:
**KSHSAA agreed to keep 1A split into two seperate divisions, 1A-Division I and 1A-Division II (with smaller 1A schools in the latter class)
**KSHSAA also approved changing the dates for the two-day softball/baseball state tournaments, to start one-day before the two-day state track meet.
