Unemployment was up in most area northeast Kansas counties in May.
According to a report released Friday by the Kansas Department of Labor, Doniphan and Leavenworth Counties were the only two area counties to see a drop in their jobless rates in May. The unemployment rate in Doniphan County fell to 6.4 percent, and in Leavenworth County to 6.9 percent.
Elsewhere, Atchison County’s unemployment rate in May stood at 7.1 percent; Brown County, 5.2 percent; Jackson, 6.8 percent; Jefferson, 6.4 percent; Nemaha, 3.7 percent; Marshall, 4.2 percent and Pottawatomie County at 5.1 percent.
All the figures were up from April, but down from one year ago.
Statewide, the unemployment rate in May remained steady at 6.1 percent. That down from 6.7 percent in May 2011.
