Northwest Missouri State University's Department of Agricultural Sciences will host an agriculture visit day Thursday, Nov. 14. The event is designed for high school students interested in preparing for a variety of ag-related careers.

High school students and their families will have the opportunity to visit with Northwest faculty and students majoring in related fields, while learning about careers in agricultural sciences. Tours of the Northwest campus also will be provided.

The day's activities begin at 9 a.m. at The Station and include a complimentary lunch at 11:30 a.m. The event concludes at 2 p.m. with an optional tour of Northwest's R.T. Wright Farm. To view a campus map click here.

Northwest offers seven agricultural sciences majors through the Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies, along with six minors in the department. The majors are agriculture business, agriculture education, agriculture science, agronomy, animal science, animal science (pre-vet) and horticulture. The minors are agriculture science, agronomy, animal science, commercial agriculture, horticulture and precision agriculture.

Additionally, the department offers hands-on experiences at the 448-acre Wright Farm, which is home to beef, swine, dairy, poultry and sheep herds, as well as row, silage and hay crops. Students also gain experience at the campus orchard, Horticulture Complex, a composting facility and on the campus grounds as the Missouri State Arboretum.

The Department of Agriculture Sciences places emphasis on creating a climate that is conducive to learning. The faculty possesses a genuine concern for students as well as a high commitment to the educational achievement of their students. Its primary goal is to educate graduates to successfully meet the challenges of a career in agriculture, while instilling in them a desire and curiosity for lifelong learning.
