Hiawatha Standoff Ends When Suspect Shoots Self
03/07/2014

(KNZA)--A man, on the run from Saint Joseph, Missouri, is hospitalized, following a self-inflicted shooting in Hiawatha.

Undersheriff Mickey Gruber says the pursuit began when law enforcement attempted to stop a tagless red pick-up truck in the area of 7th and  Iowa Streets in Hiawatha.

The suspect, during Friday afternoon's pursuit, abandoned the truck and fled on foot, making his way into the residential area of the 500 block of South 7th Street.

It was there that a standoff began, with nearby streets blocked off to keep passersby from wandering into the vicinity of the armed suspect.

The Brown County Sheriff's Department, Hiawatha Police, the Buchanan County Task Force, the Kansas Highway Patrol and Sac and Fox Police were all on high alert, standing by at the scene, trying to bring the man into custody.

However, as the incident unfolded, law enforcement emergency radio traffic reported that the man had placed a gun to his head.

Undersheriff Gruber confirms that the only shot fired during the standoff was that fired by the suspect.

The suspect was transported to the Hiawatha Community Hospital. The condition of the suspect, wanted on a Saint Joseph warrant, remains unspecified.

The pick-up he was driving at the time the pursuit began had been stolen from Saint Joseph.

The suspect's name has not yet been made public.
