(MSC News)--A 16-year-old boy is taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of an elderly rural Buchanan County couple, with formal charges now filed.
KQ2-TV reports the bodies of 72-year-old James Johnson and 76-year-old Beverly Johnson were discovered during a welfare check by Buchanan County Deputies early Saturday morning.
The couple was apparently killed with a shotgun.
It happened at their rural home, four miles east of Saint Joseph.
The 16-year-old was arrested later but his name has not yet been made public. He has been charged with two counts of second degree murder. A July 7th hearing has been scheduled. The TV station reports that a separate hearing will also be held regarding whether he should be tried as an adult.
An autopsy of the couple is being conducted in Kansas City.
