In 2005, Pat and Patty Schmelzle and family established the Kathy L. Schmelzle Scholarship with the STEP Foundation, in memory of their daughter. The Kathy L. Schmelzle Academic Scholarship for $500, is awarded to a graduating senior from Nemaha Central High School who plans to enter a degree program with a major in teacher education.
The 2017 recipient of this scholarship is Shania Schraad, daughter of Jim and Jenise Schraad. In her application, Shania expressed her lifelong desire to become a teacher so she can “have the privilege of helping younger kids learn everything they need to know about not only Math, English, etc., but also life in general.”
Shania participated in several extracurricular activities during high school such as KAYS, FCCLA, and SADD. Along with being active in her high school church choir and CCD, Shania also assisted at Catholic Heart work camp this past year.
She plans on majoring in Elementary Education at Cloud County Community College this fall.
