Using personal tragedy is the key to the telephone scam, which arises from time to time, and has, in recent days, again become prevalent locally(Play Audio 31 secs)
Merchant says anyone who receives such a phone call should not allow emotion replace good judgment and common sense(Play Audio 15 secs)
Very real close calls have accompanied the return of the scam, including one man, wanting to help a loved one, who attempted to wire money to the scammer.
Merchant says a watchful, and aware, employee of the wire service noticed what the would be victim was doing, and kept him from losing thousands of dollars(Play Audio 15 secs)
Merchant asks that anyone who receives such a phone call, after hanging up to avoid becoming a victim, notify his office of the scam attempt.
Merchant compiles data related to this type of crime, both to investigate and for local awareness.
He also shares information with the Kansas Attorney General's office in order to maintain a statewide initiative in the effort to battle such scam attempts.
