Richardson County Assessor Regina Cummings talked with our news department Friday afternoon about an effort launched by Terry Lotter and Fred Brewer to recall her from office. On the recall petition Lotter and Brewer state they started the recall effort because they feel Cummings is not performing her duties as County Assessor.
Cummings submitted a statement included on the petition and in an interview detailed some of her health issues that have kept her our of the office for significant periods of time. ( play audio :36 seconds )
Cummings has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre ( hard “G” gee-on Burree) syndrome. She explained the disease. ( play audio :20 seconds )
Cummings says she has been undergoing intravenous treatments for the disease at home for quite a while. ( play audio :28 seconds )
There is no cure for Guillain-Barre. Cummings explained what they hope to accomplish with the treatments. ( play audio :15 seconds )
Cummings has served as Richardson County Assessor since 1995. She said that she has been planning to retire and expects that to happen sooner than later. ( play audio :14 seconds )
Cummings also noted she has no intention to seek re-election in 2014. ( play audio :13 seconds )
Cummings said she has wanted to let the public know about her problems but has not done so. ( play audio :14 seconds )
Those circulating the recall petitions have 30 days to collect signatures from 851 registered Richardson County voters. That figure represents 35-percent of the total votes cast in the 2010 General Election.
If the required number of signatures are gathered Cummings can either resign her position, or face a recall election which would likely occur in May.
